The Cornell Lab of Ornithology interprets and conserves the earth’s biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds.

They encourage nest observations to help better understand the impacts of environmental change on bird populations. Studies of nesting birds can increase their understanding of population ecology, conservation biology, and behavioral ecology.

However, because there is often intense competition among nesting birds for a limited number of suitable breeding sites, many species are decreasing in population. Urbanization, habitat loss, predation, competition with non-native birds, disease, pollution, and a host of other factors all can contribute to reduced reproductive success in birds.

To date, hundreds of thousands of nest boxes have been provided to help bird populations, but many are infrequently monitored and data that are collected are not always analyzed.

Nest monitoring also increases an appreciation for birds and the natural world. Regular trips to nests enable people to witness the labors of parent birds, from the start of nest building, up to the time the young reach independence. Witnessing and understanding the nesting cycle can increase appreciation and respect for birds, which can lead to increased protection of birds.

According to experts, a nesting box should be durable, easy to check, and clean.

A good nest box should be made of untreated wood (pine, cedar, or fir) and have thick walls (at least 3/4 inches), an extended/sloped roof, rough or grooved interior walls, recessed floor, drainage holes, ventilation holes, easy access for monitoring and cleaning, no outside perches.

The first necklace she created, in the summer of 2002, was made from a Rebel bottle cap Skaggs found on a Brooklyn street. Two years later, she started crafting the unique necklaces, which feature eight beads (one being of a different color than the rest).

From there, Rhea Belle apparel began in response to the growing need for garments for women who have had a single or bi-lateral mastectomy and are moving forward without reconstructive surgery or the use of prostheses. Shortly after her own single mastectomy in 2004, Skaggs began altering and designing garments to “create visual balance.”

As a breast cancer survivor myself, I can attest to the fact that Skaggs is filling a need in the survivor community, offering jewelry and clothing that not only inspires, but also empowers.

Simpson wrote Sally The Sheep And The Very Cloudy Day , self published the book, does readings locally, and sells the book and “Sally” gear on her website.

Punky Jane
Next came Punky Jane jewelry, which evolved after Simpson spied a friend’s hand-stamped necklace with the names of her two sons stamped on it. “I loved it,” Simpson recalls. ”I causally shopped around to see if I could find something I liked and it just never clicked.”

So she investigated hand stamped silver jewelry, did a test run, came up with the name, designed the logo, business cards, etc. and created a website. She says she also “fell in love” with ETSY, where she sells her works.

Simpson says she’s focusing on learning new jewelry techniques and creating things that will set her work apart from everything else out there. She also enjoys searching for vintage metal stamps on eBay.

Creative Memories
In her “spare” time, Simpson is also a digital scrapbooker and a Creative Memories consultant.
